Stephenson Walk – Connecting Camden and Primrose Hill

Stephenson Walk celebrates one of our greatest engineers and provides access to the railway facilities he built, notably the Winding Engine Vaults. Robert Stephenson was closely involved with the area for a decade and walked the route many times while planning the London & Birmingham Railway and supervising its construction. He lived nearby in Belsize Park and his wife is buried in Hampstead

The Chalk Farm Railway Lands are in development flux. Plans have been approved for the Morrisons site and proposals are in the pipeline for adjoining areas. This offers a unique opportunity to create new through routes that serve the wider community, introduce the public to the area’s history and foster civic pride to counteract the sense of loss that urban development can create.

Stephenson Walk presents a concept that meets these aims. It extends from Oval Road and the Regent’s Canal towpath to Regent’s Park Road Bridge providing car-free through routes for pedestrians, cyclists and wheelchair users. It will stimulate a number of associated facilities.

Our speaker Peter Darley is a retired civil engineer and economist who has worked in water resources development around the world, culminating in a scheme to replenish the Dead Sea from the Red Sea. Through Camden Railway Heritage Trust, which he founded in 2007, he is working to open up the remarkable industrial and transport heritage of the area to the public, while leading walks, giving talks and writing about the heritage.

He will be in conversation with local Councillor Pat Callaghan who has been closely involved and supportive of the new walking route.
