Cria Cuervos (Raise Ravens)

Primrose Hill Community Library Film Show presents Tuesday 01 May 2018, 7:15pm Cria Cuervos (Raise Ravens) A child’s experience at the end of Franco’s Spain. Starring Geraldine Chaplin, Directed by Carlos Saura, Spain 1976 110 minutes. With Subtitles

Shot in the summer of 1975 as General Franco lay dying, Carlos Saura’s masterpiece takes its title from a sinister Spanish proverb: ‘Raise ravens and they’ll pluck out your eyes’. The film is seen through the piercing but fallible eyes of Ana, a troubled child growing up in Madrid, and focuses on her plight and tribulations as she loses first her adored mother and then her authoritarian father, a high ranking military official whom she blames for her mother’s death. Combining wit, narrative intrigue, a disarming structure and the catchiest of pop songs, Cria Cuervos is a subtle yet unmistakable indictment of the family as a repressive force in Spanish society, and memorably captures the anguish and decadence of Franco’s dictatorship as its long years draw to a bitter close.
