For around a hundred years, The Bedford was a centre of entertainment in the heart of Camden Town. What started as a tavern and tea garden eventually became The Bedford Palace of Varieties, one of London’s most popular music halls. Famously sketched and painted by Walter Sickert, the Bedford was the place where on stage you might see Charlie Chaplin, Marie Lloyd, Max Miller, Donald Wolfit in a Shakespeare play or even Wilson, Keppel & Betty performing their classic sand dance. Although long gone from Camden High Street, The Bedford lives on in the memories of local people who share them with us in this illustrated talk, which also gives us a taste of what an evening at The Bedford used to hold.
Open House takes place each Wednesday and features talks, films and performance. Starts 2pm, followed by tea, cake and chat. This is a free event.
