Betty Bird Obituary

Betty Bird

13th October1935 – 25th November 2022

Betty Osmond was born and brought up in Islington, solid working class, solid Labour, proud of her Welsh heritage. She married Keith Bird in 1956. Having started married life in Islington, living with Betty’s parents, they then moved to Camden.  In 1975 they moved to Primrose Hill with their two children Carole and Martyn. They were amongst the first tenants on Auden Place. It is hard to overestimate their influence on the community.

Betty loved children and was a wonderful mother, grandmother and great grandmother, but her care extended to the children within her local community. She was a founding member of Auden Place Nursery and took a keen interest in its development. For many years she was a governor of Primrose Hill School and subsequently supported individual children as a reading volunteer. More informally she kept an eye on the children of Auden Place; she was their friend and mentor.

Betty was always involved in the Community Association. Every jumble sale, every event, every meeting – Betty was there taking part. She never missed a Summer Fair, running the tombola with Jaz and Regina until they ran out of prizes and then moving over to help Keith and his team on the barbeque. Over the years, Betty and Keith raised thousands of pounds for the Community Association.

What a loss to our community – what a legacy!

A funeral service will take place at 14:00 on Monday 19th December 2022 at Golders Green Crematorium, West Chapel, 62 Hoop Lane, London NW11 7NL.

This will be followed by a reception at the Primrose Hill Community Centre, Hopkinson Place from 3.30pm-5.30pm.

Betty’s family have requested that donations be made to Chalk Farm Food Bank
